On December 26, 2004, the Indian Ocean tsunami caused unprecedented destruction, sweeping away homes and claiming countless lives. Those who survived, including many children, were left with profound losses, both emotionally and physically.
In Indonesia’s Aceh province, seven-year-old Tara Aulia and eleven-year-old Hamdani were among the survivors. The tsunami took not only their homes and loved ones but also led to the loss of a limb for each child.
Against all odds, within a year, both Tara and Hamdani found hope and healing at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Philadelphia. There, they received new prosthetic limbs and the chance to start anew.
Tara, who had her right leg amputated due to infection from a tsunami-related injury, quickly adapted to her prosthetic. Jeff Eichhorn, the director of orthotics and prosthetics at the hospital, remarked, “It’s wonderful to see a child adapt so swiftly. She will be able to do anything.”
Hamdani, who was swept away while playing soccer, lost his right arm above the elbow after clinging to a boat while an uprooted tree struck him. Despite this, he too found solace and recovery at Shriners.
Their journey to Philadelphia was made possible by the Global Medical Relief Fund, an organization dedicated to helping children affected by war, natural disasters, or illness. Shriners Hospitals provided all services free of charge, lifting a significant burden off their families.
Reflecting on the support they received, Tara's father, Sulaiman Aulia, expressed gratitude, saying, “Without this help, I don’t know how she would manage or live.”
Thanks to the support and care at Shriners Hospitals, Tara and Hamdani have a brighter future ahead.
