The current state of America’s immigration system is unsustainable. With an estimated 11 million undocumented individuals residing and working across the country, the need for change is evident. These individuals often fall prey to smugglers and traffickers, significantly impacting border communities. From 1998 to 2003, nearly 2,000 migrants died trying to cross the southern border, and around 400 still die each year in these perilous attempts.
Comprehensive immigration reform is essential to make immigration safe, orderly, and legal. This reform should include the following key elements:
- Pathway to Legal Status: Provide opportunities for those already living and working in the U.S. to earn permanent legal status.
- Temporary Worker Program: Establish a program with robust labor protections, allowing essential workers to enter the country safely and legally.
- Family-Based Immigration: Reduce backlogs to ensure families can reunite promptly.
Approaches that focus solely on increasing enforcement without embracing these components will only worsen existing issues. Legislative measures like the Sensenbrenner bill in the House of Representatives, which emphasize harsh enforcement, fail to enhance national security and push undocumented immigrants toward dangerous entry routes, increasing the risk of fatalities.
Instead, Congress should engage in a constructive debate and enact sensible, comprehensive reforms. Such actions will ensure the U.S. continues to be a welcoming nation for immigrants in the future.
