Students Collaborating Globally to Make a Difference
Summary:
A unique school initiative is empowering students to collaborate internationally to address global challenges. In today's interconnected world, equipping students to become global citizens is more crucial than ever. To thrive as leaders in the 21st century, understanding global issues is essential. A groundbreaking program is helping students gain this awareness while allowing schools to serve as models in cultivating global citizens.
Challenge 20/20, an initiative by the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), is an experiential learning program promoting cross-cultural collaboration and problem-solving. Inspired by J.F. Rischard's book "High Noon: 20 Global Problems, 20 Years to Solve Them," the program pairs public and private schools in the U.S. with schools across the globe. Partnered students select a global issue to tackle, researching and developing local solutions collaboratively.
Throughout the fall semester, these school teams work diligently to propose solutions to their chosen challenges. This endeavor is woven into the school curriculum, enabling practical implementation of their solutions on local campuses and within communities. By the semester's end, teams present their solutions and discuss their collaborative process.
Exceptional teams in categories PK-5, 5-9, and 9-12 receive partial funding to send a student-teacher group to the prestigious NAIS Annual Conference. Upper-level students in junior and senior grades have the opportunity to participate in the Institute for Student Leaders, while younger students can attend the Challenge 20/20 awards.
The Challenge 20/20 program is open to all elementary and secondary schools, whether public or private, from any country. Within a school, any group of students, possibly within a specific academic class, can participate. Schools may enter multiple teams to address various global challenges, provided their partner schools also agree.
This initiative encourages students worldwide to come together, fostering an environment of collaboration and creativity to make a tangible impact on global problems.
