Life Advice: Seeing Through a Window
Summary:
Discover the true essence of life by simply gazing through a window or mirror. The method is simple, but the message is profound.---
In today’s fast-paced world filled with smartphones and high-tech gadgets, life can feel not only hectic but also impersonal. We often chase after money, hoping it will bring fulfillment. But does it ever end? Many of us believe that a bit more money would make life perfect. Yet, after a raise, we often find it's still not enough.
What Should You Do?
I've read numerous books on life, like Robin Sharma’s works, claiming money isn't essential. But the truth is, it plays a role. Can we truly go without it? Personally, I can't.
Seeking direction, I visited my neighborhood Rabbi for wisdom on finding my true path.
He led me to a window. “What do you see?” he asked.
“I see people passing by and a blind man begging on the corner,” I replied.
He then guided me to a large mirror. “And now, what do you see?”
“I see myself.”
The Rabbi smiled. “When you looked through the window, you saw others and felt compassion. But with the mirror coated in a thin layer of silver, all you see is your own reflection.”
He placed a hand on my shoulder. “Consider these two pieces of glass. Without the silver, you see others. With it, you only see yourself.”
At first, I didn’t grasp his point.
He continued, “To truly become someone, you must have the courage to remove the silver layer from your eyes and really see and love others.”
Reflecting on his words, I realized he was right. Money is essential, but striving for a life devoid of it would bring hardship to ourselves and our families.
Instead, let’s heed the Rabbi’s advice: when we view life through a silver coating, we see only ourselves. Remove it, and you can see and empathize with others.
Conclusion:
We are entitled to look through both mirrors and windows in life. However, remember: while a mirror reflects only you, a window opens you to compassion, health, and true wealth. Seek wealth, but let it not blind you to the joys of life, the needs of people, or the plight of the less fortunate.
