Is the End Near?
Over the past year, countless lives have been claimed by a nature that seems out of control. Tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, and torrential rains remind us that despite our remarkable achievements, we are not the masters of this planet.
Believers in ancient prophecies argue that these events signal impending world destruction, suggesting that an apocalyptic end is near. While recent natural disasters have indeed been severe, surpassing anything in recent memory, do they truly indicate an imminent end?
The human population has grown exponentially, with instant communication making it possible for news, like a boulder striking a house, to reach global audiences within seconds. But let's consider these events in historical context, a scope far broader than human memory. Just a century ago, news traveled slowly, if at all.
For instance, the Kashmir earthquake took around 40,000 lives from a global population of 6.4 billion. Contrast this with the 1556 Shaanxi earthquake in China, which claimed over 800,000 lives from a much smaller population, most of whom were unaware of the disaster.
Today, the threats of AIDS and potential flu pandemics might claim millions. In comparison, the Black Death in 1347-1350 devastated over a third of Europe's population, taking 400 years for it to recover. Back then, there were no news alerts or videos, just tales from weary travelers.
Consider the Ice Ages that regularly swept over the earth, eradicating numerous species each time. Picture a massive meteor crashing into the planet, causing a dust cloud that blocked the sun for decades, eventually leading to the extinction of dinosaurs after millions of years of domination.
Our Earth is a dynamic and unpredictable place. It erupts, shakes, and changes on its own schedule, far beyond our short human memories. Natural forces behave as they always have. There are simply more of us now to witness and be affected by these recurring events.
In essence, while nature continues its age-old patterns, our increased numbers and technological advancements mean we are more aware and directly impacted by its might.
