Hong Kong Boy Promotes Global Peace

Summary:
"Misunderstanding and contradictions can build walls around people, shrouding us all in darkness," reflects 12-year-old Cheuk Tat Li from Hong Kong. "People will then live in a place without peace, warmth, and happiness."

Article Body:

Cheuk Tat Li, a 12-year-old student from Hong Kong, uses his creativity and optimism to envision a world of harmony. With his vivid imagination, Li crafted the winning piece at the 2004-2005 Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Reflecting on his artwork, Li explained, "The dove, striving against all odds, shatters the solid walls with its tiny beak to rescue the world from its dark maze."

The contest, open to children aged 11 to 13, offers a platform for young voices to express their visions of peace. This year, approximately 350,000 participants engaged with the theme, "Give Peace a Chance."

Since its inception in 1988, over 3 million children from nearly 100 countries have joined the contest. Sponsored by Lions Clubs International, the world’s largest service club organization, the contest collaborates with local schools and youth groups.

Final judging took place at The Peace Museum in Chicago, where experts from various fields evaluated 114 posters based on creativity, artistic merit, and thematic expression. These posters had already passed several judging rounds before reaching the Lions Clubs International Headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois.

As the grand-prize winner, Li received an award and $2,500 during a special ceremony at "Lions Day with the United Nations" in New York City. Remarkably, he was a merit award winner in the previous year’s contest.

Additionally, 23 merit award winners from countries including Australia, Brazil, China, Germany, and the United States received $500 and certificates of merit. All 24 winning posters will be showcased in an exhibit traveling to children’s museums and events across the United States.
