Homeless Youths Find Hope and a Home
A program dedicated to helping young people transition from homelessness to stability and success is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
Every year, over a million young people under 21 face homelessness in the United States. Many are runaways, others are asked to leave their homes, and some have aged out of foster care.
For these young individuals, life on the streets often means uncertainty about their next meal and the risk of dangerous activities like drug abuse, joining gangs, prostitution, and panhandling.
Fortunately, Covenant House offers a program called Rights of Passage. This initiative supports motivated individuals aged 18 to 21 by providing them a place to stay while they prepare for a better future.
Celebrating its 20th year, the Rights of Passage program allows youth to live at Covenant House for up to 18 months. During this time, they can learn a trade, earn a GED, work a steady job, or enroll in college courses. Graduates leave the program equipped to live stable, productive lives.
In 2005 alone, Covenant House helped nearly 60,000 young people across the U.S. through Rights of Passage and other programs. Covenant House is a nonprofit child welfare agency with 15 locations nationwide.
Bruce J. Henry, Executive Director of Covenant House New York and a founder of Rights of Passage, remarked, "Reaching this milestone is significant for Covenant House. Over the past 20 years, thousands of youths across the U.S. and Canada have transitioned to self-sufficient adulthood. Their stories of struggle and success are why Covenant House is so vital."
While some youths seek short-term crisis care at Covenant House?"such as a hot meal, a bed, and new clothes?"others work with counselors and eventually join the Rights of Passage program.
Covenant House operates Rights of Passage programs in several locations, including Alaska, California, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Texas, Toronto, Vancouver, and Washington, D.C.
Approximately 85 percent of funding for Covenant House's programs comes from private donors, making their ongoing support essential. Additionally, volunteers are needed to mentor young people in the Rights of Passage program.
