Present at the announcement was Armine "Mint" Chermue from the Akha tribal group in Chiang Rai, Thailand. Mint’s family, once desperately poor, received a water buffalo from Heifer, which enabled them to fund her education and that of her siblings. “I was fortunate,” Mint reflected, “many girls in similar situations are forced into dire circumstances due to poverty.”
Heifer was founded in 1944 by Dan West, an Indiana farmer and former relief worker during the Spanish Civil War. He believed those in need required "not a cup, but a cow."
Today, Heifer operates in 38 U.S. states and 50 countries, providing over 30 types of animals, alongside training in sustainable agriculture, ensuring that the legacy of self-reliance is passed from generation to generation.
