Healing Anger and Violence in Our Society
For over 35 years, I've counseled individuals, couples, families, and business partners, and authored eight books. This wealth of experience led me to develop a transformative six-step healing process called Inner Bonding. It's a method anyone can learn to use daily?"a FREE course is available (see resource box).
The tragic events in Littleton, Colorado have ignited important discussions about the causes behind such horrific actions by two teenagers. I'd like to explore this through the lens of Inner Bonding.
In my view, it's impossible for individuals to engage in violence when they are truly connected to their core selves and guided by a spiritual source. By cultivating a loving, spiritually connected inner adult, we can set boundaries on behaviors that might harm ourselves or others.
However, many people become disconnected from their true selves. Our core self embodies compassion and empathy, and losing touch with it can lead to the ability to harm others without remorse. But how does this disconnection occur?
Child development experts suggest that the loss of empathy and compassion often happens between ages two and four. If our parents lacked empathy and compassion, we might have chosen to cater to their needs or mirrored their emotional detachment. Without role models for inner connection, and especially if subjected to abuse or neglect, children may shut down their emotions as a survival mechanism.
Some children maintain their connection through comforting relationships with animals or supportive relatives and friends. Yet many disconnect just to survive. This disconnection, compounded by exposure to violent media and video games, can further numb them to empathy, compassion, and the pain of causing harm.
Children who grow up without spiritual guidance might not understand the interconnectedness of all beings or the potential consequences of their actions beyond this life.
Without a connection to their core self or spiritual guidance, individuals are left with their wounded selves. If driven by rage, this wounded aspect can manifest through anger and violence?"with disastrous results, as seen in societal tragedies. Without a loving inner adult to impose limits, harm can occur unchecked.
While restricting access to guns is a positive step, it won't eliminate violence entirely. True change requires us to prevent the closing off of hearts in young children. Parents and teachers must engage in healing processes like Inner Bonding to reclaim their own core selves and spiritual connections. By undertaking our personal healing, we become the loving role models children need. True societal transformation starts within each of us.
