Cow Transforms Life for Ugandan Orphans
Improving Lives in Uganda
In 1998, 14-year-old Geofrey Okello's life was shattered when AIDS claimed his father’s life, leaving Geofrey, his mother, and five siblings struggling to survive in Uganda.
Geofrey’s mother fought to support the family despite her illness, but she passed away in 2002. At just 18, Geofrey had to quit college to care for his siblings in the village of Jinja Wailaka. They often went hungry as he sold corn and charcoal by the roadside to make ends meet.
A neighbor eventually introduced Geofrey to Heifer International, a nonprofit organization that empowers people through livestock and agricultural training. Intrigued, Geofrey committed to the training, eager to change his family’s circumstances. He tirelessly prepared a cowshed, fenced the yard, and planted native trees and grasses for cattle fodder.
Last year, Geofrey received a cow, naming her Margaret after his mother.
"My mother gave us life and hope for a better future. Now, my cow continues this legacy," he expressed.
With newfound skills from Heifer International, Geofrey transformed his hard-packed yard into a fertile garden, growing organic squash, greens, beans, papayas, and bananas. His cow, Margaret, produces four gallons of milk daily, which he sells to pay for his siblings’ school fees, nurturing the hope of one day returning to his education.
"The AIDS epidemic continues," Geofrey remarked. "I’ll soon pass on a calf, following Heifer’s plan where recipients give back to others in need."
Through resilience and community support, Geofrey and his family have charted a path to a brighter future.
