Communicating with Purpose
Introduction
I recently attended a transformative 2-day workshop called "Staying Grounded When on the Spot," hosted by the Public Conversations Project in Watertown, MA. Designed to assist facilitators and trainers in navigating challenging group dynamics, the skills I learned are applicable across various settings, including one-on-one communication challenges.
Key Strategies
In the face of difficult conversations, regaining a centered and grounded state is crucial. Here's how:
1. Clarify Your Purpose: What do you hope to achieve through this conversation? It's essential to establish a clear and productive purpose. For example, seeking to change someone else isn't effective, as it's beyond your control. Instead, aim to understand their experience.
2. Make Purposeful Choices: Decide on actions that align with your purpose. Start by actively listening and summarizing to ensure mutual understanding. Ask questions that validate the other person and seek to comprehend their viewpoint. Identify your purpose, then choose actions that support it.
Useful vs. Perilous Purposes
Useful purposes might include sharing experiences or finding mutually beneficial solutions. Dangerous intentions, like venting or blaming, are less constructive. While it may seem obvious to avoid these, we're all guilty of them at times.
Self-Awareness
Be cautious of misconstrued intentions. Occasionally, even with the goal of learning, underlying motives like revenge or resentment may surface, undermining our efforts despite using seemingly appropriate language.
By focusing on your true purpose, you gain the courage to engage in challenging conversations and remain grounded when tensions rise. This awareness can transform interactions into opportunities for growth and understanding.
