Charity Auction Strikes a Chord for New Orleans Musicians
Summary:
Two award-winning musicians, with the backing of a renowned watchmaker, have orchestrated a remarkable effort to support New Orleans musicians.Article:
In a heartfelt response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, acclaimed musicians Harry Connick, Jr. and Branford Marsalis launched the New Orleans Habitat Musicians' Village. This initiative, a part of Habitat for Humanity, aims to provide housing for musicians who lost everything in the disaster. The goal is to preserve New Orleans’ rich musical heritage for future generations.
Following his starring role in the Tony Award-winning revival of "The Pajama Game," Connick added five final benefit performances to raise funds. Supporting this noble cause, Longines, which has regarded Connick as its ambassador since 2005, crafted exclusive limited-edition timepieces for the shows.
Each evening, Sotheby’s auctioned one of these elegant watches, with all proceeds supporting the Musicians' Village. The Swiss brand's creation, the Longines Evidenza limited-edition Harry Connick, Jr. timepiece, generated an impressive $220,000 across the five sold-out performances.
This unique watch features an automatic chronograph with a tonneau-shaped rose-gold case, embossed with Connick’s signature on the back. Accompanied by a chocolate-brown dial with white sub-dials, Roman numerals, and a genuine alligator strap, each of the 11 watches produced is individually numbered. The final watch was a gift to Connick from Longines.
This collaboration not only provides tangible support but also ensures that the vibrant musical culture of New Orleans endures.
