Dorothy Samson's journey began in an orphanage in India, where she saw firsthand the overwhelming needs of the children. Determined to make a difference, she embarked on a path that led her to Compassion International and its child sponsorship program. Today, just five years after joining the ministry, Samson provides crucial support to 25 children.

"They crawl into my lap and call me 'Auntie Dorothy,'" she said. "They are my children."

Although Samson never had children of her own, this hasn't stopped her from sharing love and compassion with those in need.

"I always dreamed of having 12 children, with plenty of boys," said Samson.

Starting from her home in Grand Junction in 1999, Samson began by sponsoring four children from India and one from Haiti. Her passion quickly grew, resulting in sponsorship of 13 children, fulfilling her dream of an abundance of boys.

When she learned of a dire need for sponsors for African children, Samson didn't hesitate to expand her efforts.

"Compassion explained the low sponsorship rates for African children due to the HIV/AIDS crisis," Samson said. "People often prefer to invest in children likely to grow up healthy, but all children are precious, even those who might be HIV-positive. They are innocent victims who deserve a happy childhood and love."

Addressing this need, Samson began sponsoring 12 African children, eight from Uganda. In September 2002, she spent five meaningful days with what she calls "my youngsters," treating them to a game park, safari, and boat ride to see hippos.

"The kids were thrilled. It was their first time seeing wild animals or experiencing a boat ride. Watching their excitement was priceless," she said.

Upon returning from Africa, Samson shared her experiences, raising awareness about her cherished Ugandan children, many of whom have faced the devastating impacts of HIV/AIDS, losing close family to the disease.

"I don't know if any of my children have HIV," she said. "I pray they don't. But it wouldn't change my love for them. They're like my own children. I hope they have a joyful childhood and reach their potential, free from AIDS."

Compassion International initiated its projects in Uganda in 1980, before the global impact of HIV/AIDS. Today, it serves over 164,000 children across five East African countries, dedicated to combating the effects of this life-threatening disease.
