Art Competition Captures the Essence of Cancer

Summary:

A cancer diagnosis unleashes emotions that words often fail to convey. Art can powerfully bring these feelings to life.

An international art competition is offering cancer patients, survivors, their families, and healthcare professionals a platform to share their experiences and inspire others through art. The "Lilly Oncology on Canvas: Expressions of a Cancer Journey" contest is accepting entries until July 31. Organized by Eli Lilly and Co., in collaboration with the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, this is the initiative’s second contest.

"People affected by cancer encounter a spectrum of complex emotions that are often hard to articulate," explained Dr. Richard Gaynor, vice president of cancer research at Lilly. "Lilly Oncology on Canvas provides a medium to voice these emotions, giving them resonance and significance."

Participants are invited to submit original art in categories such as oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, photography, and other one-dimensional forms. Each piece should include a narrative describing the artist’s personal journey with cancer.

Winners will be announced in the fall of 2006, and monetary prizes will support cancer charities of their choice. All submitted artwork will be showcased for public viewing at the Royal College of Art in Kensington Gore, London. The panel of judges consists of cancer survivors, oncologists, journalists, cancer advocates, and artists.

The first Lilly Oncology on Canvas competition saw over 400 entries from 23 countries, with the collection continuing to tour globally.

"Lilly Oncology on Canvas draws us closer to the heart of the cancer experience, allowing viewers to sense the range of emotions experienced by survivors and caregivers, and to find hope through these inspiring artworks," said Ellen Stovall, president and CEO of the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship.
