Today, technology lets us connect with others at the touch of a button. Texting, emails, and chatrooms make it easy to interact with people globally without meeting face-to-face. New dating sites emerge constantly, enabling relationships and marriages to form and dissolve rapidly. However, these technological advancements are relatively recent. To understand how romance blossomed before these changes, we spoke with Mary Walton, now 84, who married her late husband Ralph on July 14, 1942. They shared a life together until Ralph's passing in 2000.
Mary vividly recalls their first encounter:
Ralph was a handsome young soldier home on leave. We lived just a few streets apart, and our fathers knew each other. One June morning, while I was working at Coates, the corner shop, I was outside on a stepladder washing the windows. Ralph was returning from the station, and an older gentleman called out to him. Soldiers in uniform received a lot of respect back then. As Ralph turned to respond, his kitbag tangled with my stepladder, sending me tumbling down. Although it wasn't a long fall, the bucket of water drenched me. I was furious!
Apologizing profusely, Ralph helped me up. I wasn't having any of it and gave him a piece of my mind. I was quite the firebrand, and there he was, a dirty soldier, soaking me and handling me with his big hands! There I was, scolding him in the street, when he suddenly started to laugh. I was shocked! But that's when I truly saw him?"his twinkling blue eyes and charming smile. I simply ran out of steam, staring at him as he suggested meeting me after work for a dance. How could I refuse? Words escaped me.
We married a month later, just three days before Ralph returned to the war. Back then, life urged you to seize every opportunity. We had 58 wonderful years together, and I've cherished every moment.
