This made me wonder about the countless opportunities in public schools, community colleges, and universities across the United States for learning a second language. Yet, despite these opportunities, so few Americans are bilingual.---
The surprising fact is that only about 9% of Americans are truly bilingual, even though there are numerous courses available both domestically and abroad promising fluency in a second language. Meanwhile, 52% of Europeans are bilingual. Why is there such a disparity?
In my five-year journey of learning a new language, I've focused on non-traditional methods, avoiding the typical grammar-first approach. If you’ve studied a language in school, you’ve probably started with grammar books, which typically lead to the ability to translate texts but not to speak fluently. This method often leaves learners with the ability to say only basic phrases like, "I need to go to the bathroom," or, "Can I have a cheese sandwich, please?"
The key to effective language learning is to follow the same process we used to acquire our native language. It's crucial to focus on language acquisition rather than just learning rules. Achieving spoken fluency requires a different approach, one that prioritizes understanding and speaking before grammar rules.
If you concentrate on acquiring language skills first, rather than diving straight into grammar, you will better develop spoken fluency. While I can't yet discuss complex topics like physics in Spanish, I can manage simple conversations, handle a doctor's visit, and navigate everyday situations. This level of fluency is something many people strive for.
So how did I achieve this? I adopted the natural learning method we all use as children. By focusing on language acquisition, akin to how native speakers learn as kids, I first built a solid foundation of spoken fluency.
Remember, language acquisition should lead the way, followed by learning. Prioritize acquiring the ability to speak first, and the rest will follow.
