To illustrate this, I recently found myself contemplating life while looking out at the waterlogged fields from my kitchen. My partner, Jo, and I started discussing the upbringing of children to be loving, compassionate, balanced, and understanding.
The solution seems straightforward: demonstrate love, compassion, and balance. However, achieving this consistently can be challenging.
Reflecting on my childhood, I remember being eight and throwing tantrums because my parents couldn't meet my demands for attention. At that time, my mother was gravely ill with hepatitis, my father was juggling business and building a house, and my older brother struggled to adjust to a new school.
Now, at the age of 39, I realize the immense responsibilities my father bore. Despite overwhelming pressures, he heroically managed to keep everything together, and the family eventually found stability.
This realization underscores why my children need my unwavering love and understanding. My eight-year-old, like most kids her age, is trying to make sense of the world. My role as a parent is to embody love, compassion, and understanding.
By doing so, I can transform negativity into love and frustration into harmony. Children don't need authoritative, demand-driven parents. They need space, care, and kindness to thrive.
The principle applies beyond parenting. In times of struggle with health, wealth, or relationships, restoring ourselves to harmony can be transformative. It's about returning to our natural state, before desire and free will complicated things.
