Where Would You Look?

Have you ever found yourself reminiscing about the wisdom passed down by a loved one? I often think about my grandfather and the many lessons he unknowingly taught me. It was only later in life that I truly understood their significance.

One warm day in Santa Cruz, California, offers a moment I'll never forget. I was helping my grandfather expand his field to plant more crops, thanks to a neighborly handshake that allowed the use of his land?"a testament to simpler times and trust.

As his eager helper, I was tasked with fetching tools from the shed. He needed a scythe, a long-handled instrument for cutting grass or grain. Like any typical child, I found myself yelling, "I can't find it!"

My grandfather responded in Italian, "È lì dentro," meaning "It's in there." Again, I shouted back, "I don't see it."

I must have tested his patience that day. He came into the shed, exclaiming with animated gestures, "Antony! You look uppa here; it’s a notta uppa in de air. Aye yi yi, you no looka in the right place. You notta find anyting unless you looka where it is."

Despite the language barrier, I understood his message. With his help, I found the tool, and he showed me how to use it with long, smooth strokes close to the ground. Working until sundown felt like a great achievement for a young boy.

Reflecting on that day, I wonder if, as adults, we often search for our own tools?"talent, self-esteem, even love?"in the wrong places. Do we look high and low, only to discover they're not there? Perhaps we should search within ourselves for these attributes, rather than trying to find them somewhere unreachable.

Each of us has been given something unique and special by the Universe. Our true selves lie within, and if we keep searching elsewhere, we may never discover them.
