Taking Baby Steps: The Key to Effective Change
Summary
The lessons we learn as children often hold the key to success in our later years. Yet, we tend to forget these lessons, believing there’s a quicker way to achieve our goals.Article
From our earliest days, we learn valuable lessons that can guide us throughout life. However, as we grow, we often forget these lessons and mistakenly believe there’s a faster path to success.
Every parent knows that a baby doesn’t leap from being cradled to running. It’s a journey: lying helpless, then rolling, creeping, crawling, taking a step, and eventually walking and running. This progression is natural and effective. Once we learn to run, we forget how we got there. We dream of achieving our goals instantly, and when it doesn’t happen, we lose hope.
As we enter our teens and adulthood, our determination wanes. We crave immediate results and feel disheartened if they don’t materialize. It’s crucial to revisit those early lessons and recognize that today’s fast-paced world?"with its emphasis on quick fixes?"is misleading. We’re conditioned to believe that if it’s not instant, it’s not worthwhile, so we often don’t even attempt.
Consider Tatiana, a 30-year-old client who reached out to me for coaching. I recommend at least three months of coaching because meaningful change takes time. Tatiana hoped to find inner peace in just six weeks. Instead of agreeing, I asked her what she would say if I told her true inner peace couldn’t be found in such a short time. She admitted she’d be disappointed but appreciated my honesty. Now, after nine weeks of working together, she’s still engaged, and recently thanked me.
The first step toward real change is accepting that it occurs in small increments. Recognizing that you need to take little steps to achieve cherished goals is the beginning of success. Before long, you’ll look back on the small, simple actions you’ve taken, and the future you envisioned will be within reach. I promise.
The most significant step is revisiting the lessons you learned before age two: small steps are effective and prevent you from failing. Start your journey today and accept that there are no quick fixes for the things that truly matter.
