Truly Numbing Criticism
While we shouldn't indulge in needless flattery, it's essential to focus on offering encouragement. Unfortunately, many of us tend to celebrate only results rather than acknowledging effort. We often criticize more than we praise, which can dampen enthusiasm and erode confidence.
Consider the case of a teacher who complained about a fifteen-year-old student, Matthew, saying, "He never does anything right!" Realistically, is that possible?
This tendency isn't limited to interactions with children; adults do it to other adults as well. Why do we so often focus on others' failures or shortcomings? Sometimes, it's to appear smarter or superior. Or perhaps it's to assert that we were right, or to highlight our own sense of honor.
Another reason some of us are so critical is due to personal dissatisfaction. Unhappy individuals may vent their frustrations on convenient targets. Criticism often becomes a way to express underlying anger or the feeling that life has been unfair. Moreover, by criticizing, we avoid confronting our own emotions. We might even disguise our harsh words as helpful feedback.
People need guidance. We crave constructive feedback that helps us progress in a positive direction. While encouragement is valuable, honest feedback is crucial when we're being unrealistic. However, it's important to remember that some criticism is purely negative?"particularly when it targets things a person can't change. Telling your brunette, hazel-eyed spouse that you prefer blondes with blue eyes, or remarking to your slim partner that you find voluptuous figures appealing, is not only hurtful but also tactless.
Constructive criticism can be helpful when change is achievable. Demanding people to alter unchangeable traits only makes them feel inadequate and resentful.
A meaningful change requires us to focus our energies on different priorities. We educate our children to respect the environment and set aside days for recycling to support that value. Adults diligently sort their waste, hoping for a better future. Why not establish a globally recognized day every year dedicated to treating others with dignity? A day where we interact as equals, offering encouragement instead of criticism, and recognizing our shared desire for appreciation.
