I'm applying a key time management strategy right now. In the past, I tackled "busy work" early in the day, often delaying crucial tasks. Sometimes, I didn't get to them at all. Now, I prioritize writing an article each morning, as it significantly impacts my business. I stick to this routine, regardless of my mood.
As a result, I often feel accomplished before noon. My business thrives even if I spend afternoons exploring the mountains with my wife, simply because I've prioritized important tasks. Interestingly, when key tasks are completed first, there's less "busy work" left to do.
Take some time to identify the most important tasks on your "to-do" list. Break larger projects into manageable parts, and tackle one piece as your first task each day. Prioritizing important tasks isn’t new, but it's a timeless and valuable time management strategy.
Time Management Tip: Planning
The art of planning requires balance. How do you know if you're over-planning and wasting time, or under-planning and working inefficiently? Here's a partial solution.
Many of us fall into two categories: planners and non-planners. Planners, like me, enjoy making lists and strategizing. Non-planners often forget tasks simply because they lack a structured list.
Both groups face time management challenges. Here's a straightforward solution: If you're a planner, assume you're over-planning and start acting more. If you’re a non-planner, you'll likely be more efficient with a bit more organization. Consider sitting down each evening to plan for the next day.
Time Management Tip: Get Up Early
As a former late riser, I've been astonished by the impact of waking up early. You might think the timing of sleep doesn’t matter, but it does (at least for me). Is it the morning's tranquility that boosts productivity, or the distractions that accumulate later in the day?
I can’t say for sure. What I do know is that rising early creates a surprisingly expansive day. If you're not typically an early bird, experiment with it for a week or two. Apply the other time management tips as well. Effective time management creates more time for activities you love. In my case, since I've just completed my second article today, it's time for a mountain drive.
