How often have you looked in the mirror and disliked what you saw? We easily get caught up in ideals about how we should look. Whether it’s our thighs, hair, freckles, or body shape, many of us struggle with self-image. The question is, are you truly loving yourself while striving for improvement, or are you caught in the trap of “I’ll be happy when…”?

The reality is that happiness isn't about reaching a place, having surgery, or achieving a specific weight. Happiness is a feeling that originates within us, and it’s completely within our control. Many of us search externally for happiness instead of finding it within.

I understand this all too well, having spent much of my life unhappy with my reflection. I struggled with bulimia for eight years, persistently believing I was too fat. Looking back, I realized my issues weren't about weight. At 5’2” and 55kg (121lb) at my heaviest, I still saw myself as a monster. True happiness seemed elusive unless I was 48kg (106lb), which ironically only happened when I was deeply depressed or dealing with a breakup. Despite usually weighing around 50kg (110lb), I believed those last 2kg (4.4lb) were the key to my happiness.

How could a mere 2kg determine my happiness? From an outside perspective, my issues were clearly unrelated to my weight, but for me, it was an obsession. I starved myself for days, only to binge and purge multiple times daily. This destructive cycle damaged my life, relationships, and health. Even now, my digestive system suffers, and my teeth bear irreparable damage from purging.

I tried everything to change. Counselors, support groups, psychiatrists, nutritionists?"you name it, I tried it. What I hadn’t tried was falling in love with myself as I was. At 26, I began working with Nina, an insightful life coach, who guided me to search within for answers.

It took months of tears, frustration, and soul-searching, but eventually, I found peace. I understood why I used food as an emotional crutch and identified the real causes of my behavior. My eating disorder was merely a symptom of deeper issues, which I could finally address directly.

Today, I am happy, healthy, and love myself?"imperfections and all. I still have bad days and still aim for an ideal weight, but it no longer controls my life. I love myself regardless, embracing every part of who I am.
