The Secret - When You Can Walk on Water, Take the Boat (Part 1 Continued)
Summary
"Beautiful weather we're having," he said with a smile. I nodded, indifferent. The weather was the least of my concerns at that moment. "How do you know my name?" I snapped.
"Oh, I guessed," he replied casually. "Most everyone is Jim or John or Ron or Tom." Yet, something in his voice made me suspect he truly knew my name. Was this some kind of setup I'd been hearing about? Was he planning to harm or steal from me? Despite my instinct to leave quickly, something about his eyes kept me there.
"I see you're concerned for your safety," he said, as if reading my mind. "No need to fear. Thank you for helping me with the car. I thought no one would come at this hour, but there you were! People today are so fearful?"of everything, each other, the dark, even themselves. My gratitude to you, John."
I figured he was lying since I hardly did anything to help start his car. The engine seemed to start just as I told him to try again. "Anyway," I said, "I didn't do anything, but you're welcome nevertheless."
"Perhaps we'll meet again soon," he said as I headed to my car.
"Perhaps," I muttered, doubting it. He waved as I drove out of the parking lot.
By then, it was very dark, and my family must have been wondering where I was. The usual short drive home took about 15 minutes. As I pulled up to our mailbox, I collected the mail as usual. Driving up the long, curving driveway, I thought about snow removal for winter, despite it being far off.
I brushed away thoughts of Gideon, feeling I'd done my good deed for the day and likely wouldn't see him again. There were more pressing matters: dinner, walking the dog, and taking out the garbage. Dinner and a walk with Rajah, my energetic collie, would be pleasant.
Entering the house, mail and briefcase in hand, my three-year-old son, Jonathan, greeted me. He didn't grasp time well and wasn’t surprised by my late arrival. I set the mail and briefcase aside, picked up Jonathan, and headed to the kitchen. My wife, Mardai, and daughter, Malika, welcomed me warmly. The aroma of chicken stew reminded me how hungry I was.
"What kept you so late today, John?" Mardai asked during dinner.
"Oh, nothing much. Just helped someone get his car started." After dinner, I handled the remaining chores, helped put the kids to bed, and discussed the day with Mardai. We watched a short TV show, and I read a bit. Though I love reading, I never seem to have enough time. I juggle about five books at once, moving from one to another until I finish them all?"not the most efficient method, but I make it work.
We decided to turn in, and only then did I feel the day's fatigue. Reflecting on my strange encounter with Gideon, I drifted off to sleep.
