Two weeks had passed since I last saw Gideon, and things at the office were deteriorating. Our newly invented device wasn't selling as we'd hoped, and we were nearing another financial crisis. My life felt like a perpetual cycle of crises with only short breaks in between. Then, unexpectedly, I had to make a trip to the Midwest.
A potential client we’d been pursuing for six months suddenly showed great interest in our product. It was a brief trip, just two days, and soon all travel and hotel arrangements were complete. Even after multiple flights, airports still filled me with excitement, the noise of jets sparking thoughts of distant adventures. But I was on a business trip, and focus on the task at hand was essential.
After a pleasant flight and a short cab ride, I arrived at my hotel, ready for my meeting with Mr. Seymour, the company head, the next day. I’d never met Mr. Seymour but was hopeful about my proposal. As I checked in, the clerk handed me a message stating simply that M. Tarkas would meet me later. Perhaps Mr. Seymour had arranged this introduction.
In my room, I quickly unpacked and took a shower. I called home to let everyone know I’d arrived safely. Heading down for dinner, a woman stopped me in the lobby.
“Hi! I’m Marla Tarkas. You’re John!”
Momentarily startled, I asked, “Should I know you?”
“Gideon told me you’d be here and asked me to offer my help.”
Here we go again, I thought?"Gideon. I hadn’t seen him in weeks. How did he know about my trip? My secretary never gives out such information. Confused, I looked at Marla, feeling like a giant question mark.
She smiled warmly. “May I join you for dinner? We can talk more then.” I nodded, and we went to the dining room. While we waited to be served, I observed Marla. She was beautiful, with a distant, thoughtful look. Her blue eyes and golden hair gave her an ethereal quality. She seemed around 25, maybe a little older.
“How long have you known Gideon?” I asked.
“Oh, for ages,” she replied with a smile.
“I haven’t seen him in weeks. We only had lunch once. Are you good friends?”
“He’s one of my closest friends. We’ve been through a lot together.”
I wondered aloud, “How did Gideon know about my trip?”
“Gideon knows many things and has his own ways of finding out,” she replied, offering no further explanation.
Puzzled, I asked, “Do you work nearby?”
“Not too far.”
“What’s the name of your company?”
“You’ve probably never heard of it, but it’s called G & M Enterprises, Inc. I’m in the PR Department.”
“Isn’t that where Gideon works?”
“Yes, but he’s in a different department.”
It all made sense. Gideon and Marla were colleagues. He had somehow learned of my trip and asked Marla to assist me, likely trying to repay a favor. But why go to such lengths over a simple act of kindness in helping him start his car?
During dinner, I talked about my upcoming meeting with Mr. Seymour and the significant contract my company hoped to secure. We also chatted about the economy. After dinner, Marla insisted on paying, despite my objections.
“You’re my guest, John,” she said simply.
As we left, she wished me success in my meeting. I thanked her for dinner and her company. Then she mentioned I would receive a phone call later, disappearing before I could ask more. Since I wasn’t expecting any calls, I was intrigued. Perhaps Marla herself would call.
Back in my room, I relaxed and read a book, a habit whenever I traveled. I waited for the call Marla mentioned. Growing tired, I decided I must have misunderstood. I needed rest for the important day ahead. Thinking about the forthcoming meeting, I set aside my book, turned off the lights, and fell asleep, dreaming vividly.
