The day after Christmas dawned with a bitter chill in the air, yet the sun's golden rays transformed the frosty landscape into something truly magical. Deep down, I sensed this would be the day for my journey to System 22, though nothing tangible confirmed my intuition.
Christmas itself was spent joyfully at home with my family. Watching my children set up their toys reminded me of my own childhood excitement, eagerly unwrapping gifts with wild imaginings of what they might be. Though Christmas's spirit has grown more commercial over the years, the core excitement remains unchanged.
Today, however, the festivities were behind me, and the mundane world awaited. The day passed quietly at work. After enjoying a peaceful evening with my family, I handled a few household tasks before succumbing to sleep.
Then, without warning, it happened again. I found myself wide awake, looking down at my own sleeping form. Beside me stood Marla and Gideon.
"It's time for us to go to System 22, John," said Gideon. "Your body will be safe while we're gone. Are you ready?"
"As ready as I’ll ever be," I replied. With that, they each took one of my hands, and we were off. The familiar sensation of flying was soon replaced by a sudden drop, and within moments, we stood in an enormous, brightly-lit room full of strangers. Conversations filled the air as people glanced at the giant screens on the walls.
Two younger men approached us. "Your turn will come shortly, Gideon," one said, leading us to a waiting room furnished with tasteful, expensive decor reminiscent of the G & M Headquarters. We settled in, enjoying freshly brewed coffee. Even out of my body, it seemed, I couldn't resist a good cup.
"Gideon, what is this place?" I asked, puzzled.
"This is the first step in the translation process from earth to the heavens," he replied.
"What do you mean?" I inquired, still baffled.
