Just as I searched my desk for his business card, the phone rang. It was Gideon. "Ready to go to the Big City?" he asked. "I'll meet you in your parking lot at nine-thirty tomorrow morning." Before I could reply, he hung up.

The next morning at nine-thirty, I headed to my car and saw Gideon waiting. By now, little about him surprised me. "Good morning, Gideon. Ready to go?" I asked.
"Sure, let's go. I'm positive you'll have a fine morning, John," he replied.
As we drove off, I joked, "Why use a car, Gideon? Can't you traverse space and time? Let's arrive in the Big City instantaneously and skip the traffic."
His dark, piercing eyes narrowed. "I'll tell you a story," he began.
