The Meaning of Success: It's All About Your Perspective
Understanding Success
What does success truly mean? Is a stay-at-home mom successful? Is success defined by managing a multimillion-dollar empire? The key question is: Are you clear about what success means to you, and how will you recognize when you’ve achieved it? Whether you're crafting a plan to reach a specific goal or developing long-term life plans, identifying what motivates you and creating a compelling vision that directs you is crucial.
Defining Personal Success
A vital aspect of this journey is understanding exactly what success looks like for you. It's easy to keep pushing toward a goal without ever experiencing the joy of actually achieving it. Many people finish a goal only to immediately wonder, "What's next?" without pausing to celebrate their success.
If you find yourself in this pattern, or if your definition of success is so lofty that it dims your enthusiasm, take a moment to reflect on what success really means to you. Here's a tip: Don't make success solely about material possessions, like a fancy car or a big house. Consider the person you'll become, the people you'll help, and who will be part of your journey.
For me, success has always been about following my heart, making a difference, and living with passion. If I'm doing any or all of these, I'm successful.
Visualize Your Success
Unsure of what success means to you? Spend some time brainstorming. Write down any ideas that come to mind. Sharing this exercise with someone can introduce even more ideas and make it enjoyable. Dedicate at least an hour to this.
During brainstorming, don't censor yourself. Just jot down whatever comes to mind. Later, you can refine your thoughts. Begin with:
"I am successful when..."
Create a list and see what emerges. You might find things like: "I am successful when I find time for myself, when I have the freedom to pursue my interests, when my children are healthy, or when I receive income from my investments." Give yourself about 15 minutes for this exercise, and if you feel stuck, push on for a few more minutes.
Once you hit a point where ideas repeat or new ones aren't coming to mind, move to the next step. Review your list and rate each item on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being least important and 10 being most important. Write down everything scoring 7 or above on a clean sheet of paper. Spend another 10-15 minutes on this without rushing.
Prioritizing Your Success Factors
With your top seven items (or however many resonate with you), rank them from 1-7 based on their importance. If unsure, use this question as a guide:
"If I can have X but not Y, does it matter?"
For example, "If I can make a difference but have no money, does that matter?" While striving for both, this helps prioritize what's more meaningful to you.
This process helps define your personal success criteria. If making a difference is more important, rank it higher than money, or vice versa. Spend 10-15 minutes thoughtfully arranging your list.
Crafting Your Success Statement
You’re almost finished. Now, create a sentence that defines your success. You don’t have to keep the seven items in order, but consider mentioning your top three first if they are most important to you.
Spend 10-15 minutes crafting a one or two-sentence phrase encapsulating your definition of success. For instance, if your keywords are:
1. Peace
2. Money
3. Freedom
4. Flexibility
5. Making a difference
6. Leaving a legacy
7. Time for yourself
Your statement might read:
"Success for me is about having the peace, freedom, and flexibility to earn money while making a difference, leaving a legacy, and finding time for myself."
With this, you define success on your terms. Forget measuring yourself by external standards. Whether you're a business professional or a stay-at-home parent, you can both enjoy success in your own unique ways. Even if you don’t earn six figures or become a renowned expert, you remain successful in your own eyes, which are the only ones that matter.
Embrace Your Success
