The Fear of Being Alone

Summary

Gina came to me because her marriage was deteriorating. She had discovered her husband was having yet another affair, and when they were together, he was either angry or withdrawn. Despite her repeated requests for couples therapy, he showed no interest in mending their relationship.

Gina, being financially independent, could easily leave. Their children were now adults, so there was nothing binding her to this marriage. Yet, she stayed.

Why Gina Stayed

When I asked Gina why she remained, she confessed, “I’m afraid to be alone.”

This fear is common among both men and women. But why is being alone so terrifying for many?

The Root of the Fear

The fear of being alone often stems from self-abandonment.

Imagine being a baby left alone?"a terrifying scenario. As a child, you can't care for yourself; you rely entirely on others for survival. As adults, although capable of self-care, if we've entrusted our well-being to a partner, losing them can feel like being abandoned as a child. This is the root of the fear.

Self-Responsibility as a Solution

If you take full responsibility for your well-being?"valuing yourself and caring for your physical, emotional, financial, and spiritual needs?"you wouldn’t fear solitude.

Consider what you do in relationships out of this fear. Do you try to control others through anger, blame, or compliance? Do you endure intolerable or abusive behavior, thinking it's better than being alone? Do you feel as if ending up alone is a death sentence?

The truth is, we only feel alone when we abandon ourselves. Loneliness happens whether we're in a relationship or not. Ironically, Gina felt intensely lonely within her marriage, possibly more than she would have felt alone.

Gina’s Journey to Self-Reliance

I helped Gina learn to manage her loneliness and connect with a spiritual source of guidance. Understanding she was never truly alone empowered her.

Through phone sessions and a 5-day intensive, Gina learned the Inner Bonding process. This helped her become a loving adult to her inner self, capable of self-care. After a year, Gina was ready to leave her marriage. She told her husband she wanted a divorce.

To her surprise, he agreed to couples counseling. Although she decided to separate, they started working to mend their relationship, eventually attending a 5-day Inner Bonding Couples Intensive.

While not all issues are resolved, they are building a caring relationship. Gina’s willingness to confront her fear of being alone changed her behavior, prompting her husband to engage and learn with her. Even if he hadn’t, Gina was secure in her newfound self-reliance.
