Exploring Self-Esteem: A Fresh Perspective

Recently, a client approached me wanting to change her self-esteem. It's an interesting concept because self-esteem isn't something we can physically see or touch. It's more of a collection of actions and thoughts that we often label as a single entity for simplicity. To truly understand it, I devised a playful test: if I can't put it into my weekly gumbo, it might not be a "real" thing.

Through our conversation, it became clear that her self-esteem was not a concrete entity. Instead, it was a convenient label for a pattern of habitual, often negative, thoughts about herself. By treating this pattern as a fixed "thing," it resisted change, much like a frozen sculpture. In the world of NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming), we call this process of turning actions into nouns "nominalization."

Once I guided her to look past the intimidating notion of her self-esteem as a monster, we examined the specific thoughts contributing to her feelings. She discovered that she consistently talked herself into feeling inadequate. These internal voices weren't even hers; they echoed the words and tones of past influences?"parents, acquaintances, even her children?"which perpetuated her negative self-perception.

Here's the twist: these internal voices are not unique to her?"we all have them. Often, we repeat these negative thoughts without questioning their validity, accepting them as truths. This unchallenged acceptance can be problematic. But if we can change the content and nature of these voices, praising ourselves instead, the notion of self-esteem dissolves as an issue.

To help her shift these thoughts, we first changed the tone of the critical internal voice. Imagine that voice speaking in a comical, high-pitched tone like Alvin the Chipmunk, accompanied by playful circus music. Visualize adding clown faces to any negative imagery. While silencing these voices completely is tough, altering their nature is fairly easy. This playful transformation can diminish their impact, often bringing a smile in the process.

We didn’t stop there. With her internal audio system ready, we used it to highlight positive thoughts. I encouraged her to recall compliments and imagine new ones from people who truly saw her value. With some coaching, her brain began focusing more on these uplifting thoughts, generating good feelings and motivation to keep this positive momentum going. Now, she knows she has control over the narrative and can adjust it anytime.

In this way, she became the new sheriff in charge of her well-being, empowered to ensure that she feels good about herself.
