Spring Forward ?" But Not So Fast
As we set our clocks forward a few weeks ago, marking the end of winter's rhythm, we encountered a change that was not only seasonal but happened earlier than we’re used to. How did you react? Did you simply adjust the clock and carry on with your weekend plans, or did you see it as a chance to rethink your daily routines? How did this one-hour change impact your patterns? The new timing of dawn might have made fitting in your morning routine a challenge, but what opportunities did the extended daylight hours offer?
As a life coach, I often reflect on these questions. Our busy lives often put us on autopilot, which can be efficient, but we must also know when to switch it off and be present in the moment. Are you aware of your surroundings and where you're headed? Are you taking advantage of opportunities or adding unnecessary complexity to your day? What do we choose to focus on, and how much are we ignoring without even realizing it?
In a class I once taught called “Questions Not Answers,” a student asked what the course was truly about. I responded that it was a time for reflection?"something our fast-paced society often lacks. Many of us experience constant stimulation and a cultural shift toward busyness. It’s crucial to engage thoughtfully with the world, choosing whether we feel in control or stuck on autopilot.
Life’s unexpected events, like the loss of a friend or a medical diagnosis, often serve as wake-up calls. They remind us to ask ourselves important questions: Where am I going? Am I doing what I truly want? If not, what needs to change? The thriving self-help industry shows that many people are seeking these answers. While the corporate world often talks about values and missions, as individuals, we lack similar tools for meaningful introspection.
Discovering what makes life meaningful for us benefits not only ourselves but also the people and causes we care about. Personal values are a compass; they guide our decisions and keep us aligned with what truly matters. When we understand these values, we can switch to autopilot comfortably, knowing our presets match who we are. And when it's time to navigate life’s complexities, we are equipped to do so with clarity and purpose.
Changing patterns requires commitment?"to identify what truly calls to us and move in that direction. First, clarify what you want and how it will benefit you. Visualization can be powerful: imagine with all your senses having achieved your goals, and allow yourself to feel that reality. Start with small, manageable steps. Rather than committing an hour a day to a new habit, start with five minutes and gradually build up. Even the busiest among us can make this commitment.
My hope is that you embrace the longer, brighter days with intention, pushing through to break new ground in your own journey.
