Gideon casually took the pouch, not bothering to open it, and remarked, "Oh, the Ambrose Stone. Don't tell me the Boatman of Pondicherry was here." His tone was so matter-of-fact, as if this happened regularly. I glanced at Marla, hoping she would share my excitement, but she seemed even less impressed.
"That's right, Gideon," Marla said, "don't you remember the Boatman mentioning he might give the Ambrose Stone to John? But that was some time ago."
"Ah, now it comes back to me," Gideon replied, addressing me. "Of course, John, the Ambrose Stone. You've wanted it since you were a kid. You believed it would work miracles for you. You still think of it as a magic genie, don't you, John?" he added with a wistful smile.
"Isn't it legendary for its magic?" I asked, disappointed by their indifference.
"Oh John," Marla said softly, "don't you realize by now that the magic isn't in the stone? It's not in the sky, the water, or the trees. The magic is within you. It's been there all along. Stones, crystals, icons, crosses, beads, rabbit's feet?"all these are merely symbols of something greater. The magic of the Ambrose Stone is just a poor reflection of your true magic."
My heart sank. After all these years, having the stone revealed there was no magic in it after all. Was my father misled by fanciful stories? Was the tale of the old man by the river just a children's fable? Yet, Gideon seemed to know the Boatman or at least knew of him. Were there no more mysteries, no true magic left? My face fell into an expression of disappointment. Pandayji patted my shoulder and said, "I've heard tales of this stone too. Maybe they were just legends, but myths and legends often arise from some truth. Who knows, John, perhaps the legends were exaggerated."
