“An angel? You're an angel, Matthias?” I asked in disbelief.“Oh yes,” he confirmed. “I’ve always been an angel. I'm sure you’ve met others like us. It’s a treat when my assignments bring me this way. I don’t often see Gideon and Marla.”
“You know Marla too?” I inquired.
“Who doesn’t?” he replied with a chuckle.
“But you’re not dressed like an angel,” I observed.
“They call him the Angel with the Golden Wings,” said Gideon. “Show him your golden wings, Matthias.”
I could tell they enjoyed my confusion. Matthias raised his left sleeve, revealing a bracelet with a charm?"a pair of tiny golden wings, like those in any jewelry store.
“These are my golden wings, John,” he explained, “a relic from the old days when people expected us to have large, feathery wings. Those wings were impractical at high speeds and, if not for our celestial flight mechanisms, you'd have seen many fallen angels. But, expectations called for wings, so wings we had. Now, I keep mine on this bracelet as a reminder: if the Chief wanted me to have bird wings, He’d have made me a bird.”
“He means every word of it, John,” Gideon assured.
