"Yes, I do. But these thoughts don't consume every moment. Occasionally, I close my eyes and picture her on that beach. Sometimes, the vision is so vivid that I almost feel her in my arms, her lips touching mine. There was an undeniable spark from the moment we met."
I glanced at my watch and realized it was time to leave.
"When we reflect on others' choices, we often see reflections of our own," she remarked as she stood up. "Time to be on our way."
"It's been a wonderful weekend, Marla," I said, helping her up as she extended her arms. As I did, the image of Kimberly flashed before me in the dimming light. I held Marla close, running my fingers through her hair. She smiled, and without planning it, I gently drew her face to mine and kissed her softly. Her lips parted, and for a lingering moment, we stood enveloped in a wave of joy.
"Wow!" she exclaimed as she stepped back. "That was wonderful. Where did you learn that?"
I sensed she wasn't upset. In fact, it seemed she had anticipated it. "I didn’t mean to, Marla," I admitted. "I just got carried away."
"Don't be silly, John. That was perfect. Right time, right place, right feelings. Everything has its time and place," she paused, then added, "You seem a bit unsettled. Didn’t you enjoy it too? What's bothering you?"
