Gideon knew exactly what I’d love for dinner. The table was a colorful feast: seafood curries featuring grouper and arapaima paired perfectly with roti. Side dishes of chutneys, samosas, and island bhajees complemented the steaming rice biryani. At the center, Jarvis set a bowl brimming with ripe guavas, mangoes, sapodillas, and papaya.
“Enjoy your dinner,” Jarvis said as he departed.
“Everything looks delicious,” I noted, inhaling the rich aroma of the coffee. “Thank you, Gideon, this is truly a delight.”
“You and your coffee,” Gideon chuckled. “It’s from the Blue Mountains of Jamaica.” As he savored a piece of bread, he continued, “It’s not that you didn’t enjoy Kimberly’s company. You did, and I’m sure she did too. The real issue is your fear?"fear of what a relationship might mean for you. You treasure your freedom so much that anything threatening it is quickly avoided. That’s how you handle close relationships. It’s neither good nor bad.”
“So, I’m just scared of getting close to anyone?” I asked.
“To some extent, yes, John,” he replied, “but it’s not always that simple. You’ve mentioned to your closest associates that you appreciate your work because it allows you to say goodbye and move on. A part of you loves the freedom, like the wind?"often alone, but not lonely. It’s a choice you’ve made.”
“What we’re trying to convey, John,” added Marla, “is that it’s okay to have a relationship, and it’s okay not to. Both options are valid. Relationships are more about you than the other person. They’re reflections of who you are. Enjoy them; don’t overanalyze. Even brief encounters, like with Kimberly, bring excitement.”
