Seven Effective Strategies to Overcome Procrastination
Summary:
We all tend to procrastinate, even those of us who consider ourselves skilled at time management. Through my studies in Time Management, I've identified seven effective strategies to help overcome procrastination.
1. Tackle the Toughest Task First:
For years, I've applied this strategy by identifying the most daunting task on my list and tackling it first. Whether it's in the morning, after lunch, or in the evening, starting with the hardest task makes the rest of the day seem easier. This approach is often referred to as "swallowing the frog."
2. Break Down Big Tasks:
Procrastination often stems from feeling overwhelmed by a large task. By breaking it into smaller, more manageable parts, you can make steady progress. Remember, climbing a mountain happens one step at a time.
3. Enlist a Friend's Help:
I’m not just talking about delegation. Share your goals with a friend and ask them to help you get started. Often, beginning a task is all it takes to gain momentum.
4. Start with the Pleasant Parts:
If a task contains some enjoyable elements, focus on those first. This can help you make progress on your most important items.
5. Commit to Just 15 Minutes:
Tell yourself you’ll spend only 15 minutes on a task. This limited time commitment can make daunting tasks feel more approachable. Often, those 15 minutes are enough to gain momentum or even complete the task.
6. Keep Track of Your Progress:
Simply tracking your goals can motivate you to keep moving forward. Knowing you’ll have to record your progress can be a powerful push.
7. Use Rewards and Consequences:
We often act when the pain of not completing a task outweighs delaying it. By associating task completion with a reward, or setting up consequences for inaction, you can encourage yourself to move forward.
Remember, even successful individuals procrastinate from time to time. It’s not a permanent state, and with these strategies, you can manage it effectively.
