Notes From A Hypnotist: How to Repair a Broken New Year’s Resolution (Part 1)
Summary:
Have you broken your New Year’s resolution yet? If not, you're among the few who haven’t. Why is keeping resolutions so rare? Because making resolutions is a cultural habit, and sadly, so is breaking them. Most people expect to fail. As a hypnotherapist, I see the post-New Year’s rush. But it doesn't have to be this way. Here's how to prevent or repair a broken resolution.
Mistakes We Make:
Mistake 1: Resolution Too Complex or Severe
Declaring, "I’ll never eat candy again!" is too extreme. Or making a complex plan like, "I’ll work out every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, unless it’s a holiday..." can be overwhelming. Life is unpredictable; aim to work out three times a week and adjust as needed. Rethink unrealistic resolutions.
Mistake 2: Focused on Don’ts, Not Do’s
Resolutions need a good mix of actions and restrictions. Instead of only listing foods to avoid, create a menu of healthy choices. For weight loss, say, "I will focus on fruits and veggies as snacks." Knowing what you’re adding, not just what you’re removing, makes a difference.
Reminder: Simply stating goals isn't enough?"take concrete actions.
Mistake 3: Ignoring Important Needs
Overindulgence often signals unmet needs. Have an honest conversation with yourself, or seek advice from a trusted friend or professional. Identify and address these needs healthily. Leaving them unresolved can lead to repeat behaviors.
Mistake 4: Expecting Failure
A friend often resolved to lose 15 pounds, only to regain them. Her language included doubts like, “I hope” or “I’ll try.” These phrases set the stage for failure. Think of resolutions as self-hypnotic suggestions. Remove doubt and seek support needed for success.
Mistake 5: Lack of Support
Whether losing weight, aiming for a new job, or seeking a life partner, confide only in supportive individuals. Avoid sharing with those who may undermine your efforts. Protect your goals by seeking encouragement from true allies.
