"There is really nothing else we can do," the chief physician sighed deeply. "We must now wait." A horrible emptiness engulfed me. Had we come so far only to suffer defeat? Losing all our material possessions years before was hard, then losing my father*, and now my wife? No! My heart protested, desperately trying to will a change in destiny. She would recover as she had many times before?"she had to. Yet a quiet voice whispered, "John, you may say goodbye now."I returned to her room, watching her rest peacefully. The doctors had given her strong painkillers to ensure her comfort. Holding her hand, I whispered, "This is just a blink in eternity. Wherever you go, I will find you." Tears welled up. Suddenly, the room filled with a brilliant glow, accompanied by distant music.
I fell silent, kissed her forehead, took a final look, and left the room. Moments later, a doctor approached me with a sad shake of her head, saying, "She's gone. I'm truly sorry." On that summer day, far from my birthplace, a light inside me extinguished. Darkness deepened into a void, obscuring the meaning of life. Existence seemed so fragile, a fleeting moment.
Yet even as I cried, a nobler part of me whispered the hope every soul needs on its journey home. From despair's depths, an understanding greater than any I'd known would emerge. In the days ahead, there would be sadness, loneliness, and reflection. But a purpose would lead me onward. Though I wouldn't see her face or feel her presence, I knew Mardai would always be with me. We are bound throughout eternity to what we love; neither heaven nor Earth can separate souls destined to be together. One soul might advance for a time, but the other always follows.
Thus ended one chapter of my life as another began. All endings herald new beginnings. The closing of one door preludes the opening of another, and yet, I sometimes wonder why doors exist at all.
