John, stop being so hard on yourself. You've faced enough criticism in the past. We genuinely enjoy your company. Your desire to learn and improve drives your curiosity. You never annoy us; we care about you too much. Let's get going. After a good night's sleep, you'll feel much better.
"Thanks, Gideon. Please, let me help cover dinner," I insisted.
"No, John. It’s on my expense account. Remember, we're with G&M Enterprises, Inc., and the pay and benefits are excellent."
"Why don't you get me a job at your company, Gideon?" I asked. "I could use those benefits and a pay increase."
With a familiar twinkle in his eye, he replied, "You already work for the company, John. You, Marla, and I are in the same department. Your trouble is thinking you work for everyone else when you only work for yourself and the company."
"What do you mean?" I asked, but he offered no further explanation.
We soon reached the front of the building, where a limousine awaited. As we climbed in, Marla whispered, "It was a delightful evening. We'll see you again soon."
The doors closed, and a phone began to ring. Why call now? Feeling drowsy, my eyes briefly closed. The ringing continued until I jolted awake. To my surprise, I was in my bed at home, reaching for the ringing phone on the bedside table.
“Hello,” I answered, noting the clock read 7:11. It was morning. "Hello," I repeated.
A voice replied, "It's your wake-up call, Mr. H. Have a pleasant day!"
Before I could respond, the caller hung up. I sat up, trying to clear my mind. I don’t receive wake-up calls at home. How did I get here? Memories of last night with Marla and Gideon, the babysitting arrangements, the restaurant, and the little Scottish village all flooded back. I felt bewildered and disoriented.
