As I pondered my life’s major hurdles, Theo spoke of trees, yet his message was profound. We get so caught up in what seems urgent that we overlook the truly important aspects: our loved ones and our planet.
“I think I’ll have more wine,” I said, reaching for the bottle. I poured myself a glass and offered it to others. It was the finest wine I’d ever tasted. Some of my more radical religious friends warn me about drinking it, claiming I’ll face consequences. It was a casual comment, but Gideon took the opportunity to share his thoughts.
“Remember Jesus?” he asked. “He enjoyed wine, too. His first miracle was turning water into wine. He was a popular guest in Jerusalem. The key is moderation, John. Indulge, but don’t overanalyze. Speaking of Jesus, remember that party with Marla years ago? I’d love to do that again. What do you think?” I inquired.
“That was a wonderful gathering,” Marla chimed in, “Though it was a different time and place. You learned so much then, which helped you navigate tough times without surrendering. What did you enjoy most, John?”
I noticed she didn’t answer my question directly but posed one instead. Both Marla and Gideon were always purposeful in their words. Every question had meaning.
“I’m not certain if it was a dream or reality, Marla. So much time has passed. I suppose it doesn’t really matter,” I replied, realizing I hadn’t fully processed my response.
