I gently placed a kitten on the car hood and tried the door again. Locked. I leaned against it, closed my eyes, and imagined driving home. Suddenly, a strange feeling told me to try once more. Glancing back at the kitten, she watched me quietly.
Every door was locked; I drive a four-door car with an electric lock system. It was no use?"but I checked them all anyway. Desperate, I considered calling a cab to fetch my spare key, just as the kitten darted under the car.
"Careful!" I called. "Come back here."
She returned, and I picked her up, teasing that I'd lock her in until her owner came. As I said it, I absentmindedly lifted the door handle. Miraculously, it clicked open. Stunned, I stood with my mouth agape. How many times had I tried that door? I placed the kitten in the back seat, retrieving my groceries from the hood. When I turned back, the kitten was gone?"not a trace. Perhaps she returned to her owner. I exhaled a deep sigh of relief.
