When I woke up, daylight had already filled the room. I headed to my favorite spot with a steaming cup of morning coffee?"the kitchen seat by the large window that offers a view of the woods behind the house. Earlier that year, I had set up several bird feeders, and I took delight in watching the birds feast on the seeds Malika and Jonathan had put out for them. One feeder hung between two towering oak trees, suspended on a thin wire?"a strategy to keep the ever-persistent squirrels at bay.
Squirrels, it turns out, are quite clever. Despite my efforts, they always found a way to the feeders. This morning, I watched as two young squirrels eyed the hanging feeder with intent focus, seemingly calculating the distance they needed to jump. Finally, one jumped, bumped into the feeder, and tumbled to the ground. In doing so, they shook some seeds loose, and both eagerly indulged in the free meal. They took turns jumping and knocking the feeder, each benefiting from the other's attempts.
There was no conflict in their dance?"only cooperation and sharing. As I watched them, I forgot about the book that had arrived in the mail and the problems waiting to be solved. I wondered who taught the squirrels their acrobatic feeding techniques. How did they know to bury nuts? What life force and intelligence guided them so gracefully through their routines? Animals possess a calmness rarely seen in humans, seemingly living wholly in the present without yesterday’s regrets or tomorrow’s worries.
