In recent times, these four stages have often been simplified into two: the householder and the monk. The householder’s responsibilities extend to family and societal duties, while the monk dedicates entirely to spiritual pursuits, preaching, and worship.
Consider the teachings from the Maha-Nirvana-Tantra: it illustrates the complexities a householder faces in fulfilling duties perfectly. The householder must stay devoted to God, keeping divine knowledge as a life goal while performing worldly duties. It's a challenge to work without attachment to the results and to serve others without seeking gratitude or recognition.
Even the timid find courage through praise from others, and fools can perform heroic deeds when recognized by society. However, the true challenge, the highest form of sacrifice, is to consistently perform good deeds without seeking approval.
For a householder, earning a livelihood is crucial, but it must be done with honesty and integrity, avoiding deceit, cheating, or theft. His life’s purpose is to serve God and help the poor, embodying selfless service.
