My Very Own Guest House
Word Count: 456
Summary:
Recently, I attended a women's writing workshop retreat to recharge and find inspiration. During the retreat, we engaged with a poem by Rumi, translated by Coleman Barks.
The Guest House
"This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond."
My Reflections on Rumi's Guest House
Rumi's wisdom, that all emotions and thoughts are guests, encourages me to relax and learn from them. Someone recently advised me, "What you resist, persists." This resonates deeply. If I ignore a guest, she finds her way in regardless, maybe through the back door or even the chimney. These emotions are sent from above, offering gifts and lessons about myself?"thank goodness for their persistence.
Reflecting on these 64 years, I realize:
- I've learned to love myself despite past self-hatred.
- I've discovered the freeing power of forgiveness, releasing me from negative ties.
- I've found love and respect, celebrated by a wonderful partner.
- I've overcome the grips of destructive habits and relationships.
- I've healed a once-sick body.
- I've chosen peace and happiness over ego-driven rightness.
- I've embraced each experience as a learning opportunity, filled with love.
This being human is, indeed, a guest house. Every morning brings a new arrival.
I wonder which guest, now packing her suitcase, is being sent to guide me to my next discovery.
