Making the Leap: From Employee to Entrepreneur

A Journey of Transformation by Suzanne Mulvehill

I was determined to make my mark in the corporate world, so in 1993, I pursued an MBA. Two years later, I found myself with a high-paying job, thinking I had achieved success. Yet, fulfillment was elusive.

One day, a nagging intuition told me I was on the wrong path. I craved something different, but uncertainty clouded the way. For two years, I wavered between the comfort of job security and a deep sense of dissatisfaction. Finally, in my third year, I decided to explore new horizons. I started an idea journal, dreaming of becoming my own boss.

This period of exploration hit a wall when a work incident left me feeling betrayed. I was given a role to lead a sales team, only to have it taken away because of a test I didn't pass. Angered, I resigned the next day?"a rare moment of standing up for myself.

As the anger faded, fear gripped me. In two weeks, the reliable paycheck would be gone. As a single mother of two, this was terrifying. The fear grew overwhelming, so I returned to my job, relieved but still yearning for change.

Stuck once again, I vowed to be prepared for my next departure. I attended business start-up seminars, learning the importance of saving money and crafting a business plan. With determination, I juggled my full-time job, parenting, and planning for my future business.

I decided to venture into publishing, an industry I knew well. Five months after my first misstep, I handed in my notice once more. My boss’s skepticism about needing a million dollars in capital crushed my spirits. I didn’t leave my job.

Feeling defeated, I realized external preparation wasn’t enough. I needed to focus inward, confront my fears, and build confidence to face the unknown. I embarked on a personal journey, embracing change, seeking spiritual guidance, and meditating regularly. Books like Deepak Chopra's "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" helped me transform from the inside out.

Nine months after my first attempt and just four months after the second, I resigned for the final time. The night before, a dream reassured me of my newfound freedom. I took a month off to recover physically, mentally, and emotionally. During meditation, I visualized life as a consultant.

To my surprise, an opportunity presented itself before I even had business cards. After learning how to draft a contract at the library, I secured my first client.

Now, it's been over eight years since I left the corporate world. I am an award-winning author, an internationally recognized speaker, and a radio talk show host. My journey proves that passion, patience, and perseverance can turn dreams into reality.
