Introduction
As humans, we perceive the world through our five senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. This sensory information forms the basis of how we internally represent the world around us. Every thought or memory you have, utilizes these senses, incorporating pictures, sounds, feelings, smells, or tastes.
Understanding Submodalities
The sensory information we process contains various qualities and distinctions. For instance, a picture in your mind can be still or moving, bright or dim, and in color or black and white. These distinctions exist across all the senses.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) introduces the concept of submodalities to describe these finer sensory distinctions. Although we might not often consider how we encode this information in our brains, understanding submodalities can be incredibly valuable.
Transforming Memories with NLP
By altering how memories are encoded, you can change their meaning. This technique can adjust memories and expectations about the future to be more or less intense, positive or negative, desirable, or real.
Have you ever recalled a past event and felt intense unpleasant emotions? Sometimes, triggers like a word, smell, or sound can evoke such feelings. NLP offers techniques to diminish or eliminate the intensity of these memories. By examining and modifying how they are coded, unpleasant memories can lose their negative emotional charge.

3. Experiment with the picture’s brightness, color, and perspective. See how these adjustments alter your perception of the memory.
4. Pay attention to accompanying sounds. Change a voice into something comical or adjust the volume and quality to see what makes the memory more pleasant.
5. Focus on the feelings associated with the memory. Where are they located? Try moving them elsewhere, like your toe, and alter their shape and motion.
This exploration allows you to play around with submodalities and notice the impact on your emotions.
