I Love NLP But I’m Not a Nerd
Embracing the Power of NLP
Discovering NLP
Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) has revolutionized the therapy world with its ability to create rapid and lasting change. What's even more appealing is that you don’t need a PhD to master its simple yet effective techniques. There are countless trainers and institutions offering NLP courses, producing practitioners at an impressive rate. However, the quality of training can vary significantly, with some schools criticized for not providing adequate preparation, leading to inexperienced practitioners entering the field.
The Real Challenge: Mastering NLP
The real challenge in NLP isn’t finding a place to learn or someone to teach it to you; it’s excelling in its practice. Two key factors influence a practitioner’s ability to thrive:
Charisma
Despite the most intensive NLP training, the natural charisma that someone like Milton Erickson possessed is hard to teach. His conversational elegance could inspire profound changes in the subconscious mind. Is this charisma a teachable skill? It's debatable. Some practitioners might need therapy themselves before they can help others. I remember contacting therapists to introduce our company, People Building, and receiving a dismissive reply from an NLP Practitioner trained by Dr. Richard Bandler. A certificate doesn’t necessarily equate to proficiency.
The Law of Requisite Variety
This principle states that the person with the most behavioral flexibility holds the greatest influence. I once attended an EFT seminar and encountered therapists practicing something called Guided Self Healing. While I wasn’t familiar with their methods, they insisted I was a "9" based on their system, much like astrology labels me a Pisces or Chinese astrology deems me a Goat.
Embracing Flexibility in NLP
NLP thrives when practiced with fluidity. Strategies and anchors can be effective, but if the client is skeptical, results may vary. It’s crucial to adapt and accept unexpected outcomes. A true NLP practitioner refrains from categorizing people, recognizing instead that everyone can choose who they want to be.
To genuinely practice NLP, therapists should tap into their full potential to facilitate change in their clients, moving beyond labels and fixed expectations. Only then can we unlock all our internal resources and foster transformative experiences.
