It's Tough Being Conscious
Introduction
Do you ever feel like living a conscious life demands more from you emotionally than living less mindfully? Years ago, I made a T-shirt with the phrase, "It's a B*tch Being Conscious." I wore it during my Journey Into Ecstasy workshop because it reliably evoked knowing laughter from participants.
The Challenge of Consciousness
So, why do we pursue this path? Why invest so much effort into self-improvement when sometimes we’d rather tune out, grab a drink, or channel surf? Why endure the struggle without guaranteed rewards, often paying a hefty price for the privilege? Are we simply masochists in disguise, or could ignorance indeed be bliss? Remember, it's been said that the unexamined life isn’t worth living, though many might disagree.
The Quest for Clarity
Typically, I should provide satisfying answers to these questions. I should affirm the hard work, the money spent on coaching, therapy, workshops, and books, and the bravery needed to confront personal demons. Yet, I can't definitively say why we do it.
When my coaching clients express the difficulty of this journey, I empathize and encourage them. I ask, "Doesn’t clarity feel better than confusion? Doesn’t experiencing your emotions beat feeling numb?" Occasionally, they concede that they appreciate living in awareness. Other times, their skeptical looks say otherwise.
The Temptation of Escape
I understand. The fleeting satisfaction from blaming others or playing the victim is tempting. Blaming feeds the ego, while victimhood allows us to shirk responsibility. Who wouldn’t want that?
But once the high fades, I’m left with the hangover of depression, low self-esteem, helplessness, and hopelessness. I see in the mirror someone who chose predictability over possibility, trapped in routine and loud complaints. This familiar reflection isn’t one I admire.
The Pursuit of Joy
Amidst resistance, I silence the inner noise and remind myself of consciousness’s ultimate goal: happiness. I affirm that I’m more than my fears and self-judgments. I quiet my mind to hear my spirit's whispers. Perseverance sometimes leads to moments of unexpected joy, and more often, a sense of peace. I'm grateful for that.
Conclusion
Is it all worth it? That’s a question we each must answer for ourselves.
