How to Plan Your Time for Maximum Productivity

Summary

Not all time is of equal quality. When I’m alert, rested, and focused, my productivity can be three to five times higher. My goal is to maximize these highly productive hours.

This idea links back to Stephen Covey's seventh habit of highly effective people?"sharpening the saw. It’s illustrated by a woodcutter who is tirelessly sawing a tree but refuses to sharpen his saw due to lack of time, not realizing how much easier it would make his task.

I've realized that I've been like that woodcutter, cutting away without taking the time to sharpen my saw. My focus now is on identifying the activities that recharge me and incorporating them into my days and weeks. This approach, which I call Reverse Planning, prioritizes downtime to boost productivity.

Activities to Sharpen My Saw

1. Sleep: I’m not sure how much extra sleep might enhance my productivity, given how hard I've pushed myself. I plan to schedule 6-7 hours per night to see its impact.

2. Exercise: Missing workouts makes me resentful. I’ll schedule one-hour sessions five days a week and longer workouts once a week. This also relates to sleep, as overworking forces me to choose between rest and exercise.

3. Evening Walks: A 15-20 minute walk each evening helps clear my mind.

4. Tidying and Organizing: A neat environment boosts my productivity. I’ll dedicate an hour weekly and 10 minutes daily to this.

5. Social Time: I’ll schedule social activities a couple of evenings each week.

6. Intellectual Challenges: Engaging in activities like playing bridge, chess, or Sudoku for five hours a week, even if it feels indulgent, keeps my mind sharp.

7. Reading for Pleasure: I’ll also allocate some time to enjoy reading books purely for pleasure.

My list is still evolving. The challenge now is sticking to my reverse time plan and not getting overwhelmed by daily demands.
