Healthy Selfishness Put Yourself On Your To Do List
Below is a MRR and PLR article in category Self Improvement -> subcategory Time Management.
Healthy Selfishness: Prioritize Yourself
Are You Last on Your List?
When was the last time you prioritized self-care or indulged in something just for fun? If your answer is "a long time ago," "can't remember," or "never," you're not alone.
From a young age, many of us are taught to "avoid being selfish" and "think of others first." While these lessons are valuable, we often take them too far?"spending every day meeting others’ needs, ticking off endless to-do lists, and fulfilling obligations. Meanwhile, our own needs languish at the bottom?"if they make it to the list at all.
The truth is, constantly putting yourself last doesn’t work. Ignoring your own needs can lead to burnout, dissatisfaction, and even resentment. Without regular self-care, it’s hard to give your best to others. You need to replenish your own energy to show up fully at home and in the world.
Put Yourself First
Many of my clients come to me feeling depleted. They’re eager to discover their next steps or make a meaningful impact, but first, they often need self-care. Only after recharging do they become ready to pursue a deeply fulfilling life path.
Remember the airplane safety rule: put on your own oxygen mask before assisting others. In emergencies, you need to be alert and capable to help. The same principle applies to all areas of life.
If you aspire to be happier, a better spouse, parent, employee, or friend?"or if you aim to live out your true purpose?"start with yourself. Make choices that nourish and energize you, and you'll naturally be more generous with your time, energy, and resources. This is healthy selfishness.
Maximizing Self-Care
If this resonates with you, your next question might be, "How do I take care of myself?" There are countless self-care suggestions?"exercise, healthy eating, meditation?"but where do you begin?
I recommend focusing on activities that truly excite and energize you. Choose something that delights, soothes, or nurtures you. My clients have found joy in getting massages, singing karaoke, reading magazines, dining with friends, practicing yoga, taking nature walks, or planning favorite vacations. The possibilities are endless and personal to each individual.
What activities light you up? Take a moment to visualize your favorites?"perhaps those you rarely make time for. Jot these ideas down, and better yet, place some at the very top of your to-do list. Then, make time to enjoy them. Notice how your energy soars when you carve out time for yourself.
So go ahead?"embrace a little selfishness. Put yourself at the top of your to-do list. Healthy selfishness might just be the best thing you do for yourself, those around you, and the world.
