Forgive to Live: Free Yourself from Emotional Baggage
Forgiveness can often feel challenging because many of us mistakenly equate forgiving with condoning?"saying, "Oh, that's okay." This misconception makes it hard to forgive, especially since what needs forgiving is frequently NOT okay. It's not okay for it to have happened, and it's not okay to happen again. Even when an offender shows sincere remorse, forgiveness can still be tough.
Understanding Forgiveness
When you look up 'forgive' in the dictionary, you’ll see it defined as 'to cease to feel resentment against.' Who benefits from this? You do. Forgiveness is about your well-being. While the other person might also benefit from your lack of resentment, the transformative change is within you. The choice to forgive is yours, and the emotional shift that follows is personal.
Personal Journey
For years, I clung to anger and resentment towards people who had wronged me. I used these feelings as a protective shield, vowing never to be hurt again. However, this shield ultimately isolated me, hindering new friendships and connections. Who did this truly harm? Me. My refusal to forgive shaped my life negatively.
Setting Down the Baggage
Now, I view forgiveness as laying down the emotional baggage of past hurts, emerging stronger. Consider this: how can you welcome today's blessings if your hands are full of yesterday's resentments? You can't change the past or force an apology, but you can choose to pursue happiness.
Forgiving for Yourself
The person I forgive might never know. That’s not the point. The negative emotions burden me, not them. By forgiving, I liberate myself.
If forgiving feels impossible because of lingering anger or the belief that it condones the wrong, try reframing it. Instead of saying "forgive," say "cease to feel resentment against." This approach might feel more empowering and akin to saying, "I forgive you."
In practicing forgiveness, you gift yourself freedom and the power to move forward unburdened.
